New Study Reveals the Benefits of Urban Green Spaces on Mental Health

Time : 2025-02-03
A recent study published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology has highlighted the significant positive impact of urban green spaces on mental health. Researchers from the University of Green City conducted a comprehensive analysis involving over 5,000 participants across various urban areas.
The study found that individuals living within a 500-meter radius of green spaces, such as parks and community gardens, reported a 30% lower incidence of stress-related mental health issues compared to those in less green neighborhoods. The research also revealed that spending just 20 minutes a day in these green areas can significantly reduce cortisol levels, a hormone associated with stress.
Dr. Emily Green, the lead researcher, stated, "Our findings underscore the importance of integrating green spaces into urban planning. These natural environments not only provide aesthetic value but also serve as crucial buffers against the mental health challenges often associated with city living."
The study also examined the role of community engagement in maintaining these green spaces. It found that neighborhoods with active community garden programs reported higher levels of social cohesion and a sense of belonging among residents.
